The Mercer County School District will lay off 24 employees as it works to close a more than one-million-dollar budget deficit.

The school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the district’s recommendation for the reductions for the 2026–27 school year.

The layoffs include eight teachers and 16 support staff members.

In addition, one teacher was dismissed for reasons unrelated to the workforce reduction, and one custodian resigned.

Before the vote, the meeting turned emotional. Teachers, staff, and parents addressed the board, urging members to reconsider and keep more than two dozen employees in the district.

District leaders say the staffing cuts are necessary to help eliminate a deficit of over one million dollars.
