What should have been a celebration for the winner of the Hancock County republican primary election for county treasurer was marred this week after the salary for the treasurer position was reduced just before the primary election.
Shannon Kissinger, who won Tuesday’s Republican primary, said she was surprised by the timing of the decision. The Hancock County Board voted Monday to cut the position’s salary by more than $10,000.
Kissinger defeated Debra Roskamp in the primary and is unopposed in the general election. Still, she says the pay cut overshadowed what should have been a celebratory moment.
Current Treasurer Kris Pilkington, who is retiring after 24 years, said Kissinger has been preparing for the role and has been closely trained for the transition.
County Board Vice-Chairman Wayne Bollin said the reduction was based on what the board views as a lack of experience among the candidates, noting it will take time for a new treasurer to fully learn the position.
Kissinger pushed back on that reasoning, pointing to her experience as chief deputy treasurer.
