The Iowa Department of Transportation is warning residents about a new scam involving fraudulent text messages.

Officials say the messages claim drivers owe money for unpaid traffic violations or tolls and may appear to come from the DOT or a “DMV.” The texts typically include a link prompting users to make a payment, but authorities say they are designed to steal personal and financial information.

The DOT stresses it does not send text messages requesting payment or sensitive information. Any legitimate transactions are handled through mailed notices or secure online systems initiated by the customer.

Officials also point out a key red flag: Iowa does not have toll roads, so any message claiming unpaid tolls in the state is a scam.
