Firefighters from Fort Madison and Keokuk joined forces late last week for a specialized hazardous materials training exercise.

According to Fort Madison Fire Department Capt. Neal Gathers, members of the Lee County HazMat team—made up of both departments—took part in a two-day session focused on a propane bobtail truck scenario. Crews conducted live fire training, simulating a truck fire while practicing how to safely shut off valves and deploy charged hose lines.

Gathers and Lt. Drew Weisinger, who serve as training officers for the Fort Madison Fire Department, helped lead the effort. The Burlington Fire HazMat team also participated on the first day at the training facility off 53rd Street.
