The Iowa Army Ammunition Plant has received federal approval to safely manage hazardous materials as it works toward long-term disposal solutions.
Plant officials say lead azide—previously used in production—has now been reclassified as hazardous waste. In response, the facility requested and was granted an emergency permit under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The permit allows the plant to formally store and manage the material while a permanent disposal method is developed.
To reduce risk, the lead azide will remain stored in earth-covered magazines designed for explosive materials. Lt. Col. Daniel V. Nosse emphasized that safety remains the top priority for workers, the surrounding community, and the environment.
The plant recently resumed operations following a precautionary pause that began March 12 after the material was discovered. Officials say they will continue working with federal regulators and keep the public updated as plans for safe disposal move forward.
