Des Moines County is seeing construction of a new bitcoin mining operation near Highway 34, marking its entry into the growing cryptocurrency industry.
The site will be operated by AUR-Middletown LLC, a subsidiary of AURUM Capital Ventures, and will house large container units filled with computers that run continuously to mine digital currency. Iowa’s relatively low energy costs and strong wind power generation have made it an attractive location for these energy-intensive facilities.
However, similar projects elsewhere in the state have faced resistance over noise, energy use, and limited job creation. Woodbury County denied a permit for a second mine in 2025 following public concerns, and other communities have pushed back on expansion efforts.
Des Moines County’s lack of rural zoning means residents have little say in the project’s location, leaving fewer options for public input as development moves ahead.
