County officials in Louisa County are considering new regulations following ongoing issues at a mobile home park near Wapello.

The Hawk Eye reports that members of the Louisa County Board of Supervisors discussed drafting an ordinance that would require landlords to maintain safe and functioning water and sewer systems. The proposal comes after repeated complaints about failures at Woodland Mobile Home Park, where tenants have reported outages and delayed repairs.

Supervisor Shawn Maine said the concerns prompted a request for the county attorney to prepare the ordinance. Officials say the issues have persisted for years and may involve uninhabitable living conditions.

Mike Peterson, superintendent of the Wapello Community School District, told the board the situation is also impacting local schools. He said student enrollment often drops during colder months when families leave the park due to poor conditions, reducing district funding and straining resources for student services.

Board members also noted regional efforts to address housing concerns, with the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission exploring rental inspection programs for area communities.
