The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors is considering a temporary moratorium on new industrial projects that could bring data centers, bitcoin mines, or other cryptocurrency operations to the county.
During a work session Tuesday, all three supervisors backed the idea, saying they want time to determine whether new regulations are needed.
The discussion follows the recent opening of a bitcoin mining operation east of Big River Resources along Highway 34, which has raised concerns among residents about future development and possible strain on county resources.
Without a county ordinance, new industries can currently locate in Des Moines County without a local permitting process or county oversight.
