
An inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of another inmate serving a life sentence for murder.
Anthony Michael Koehlhoeffer, 36, was convicted March 27 by Judge John Wright after being convicted in the death of 64-year-old Gary Showalter Sr.
The assault happened Dec. 19, 2024, in the prison kitchen after a verbal altercation between the two men. Investigators said surveillance footage showed Koehlhoeffer shove Showalter to the floor before repeatedly punching, kicking and stomping him in the head and face, including after he appeared unconscious.
Showalter was taken to the University of Iowa Health Care, where he died Dec. 28, 2024.
Showalter had been serving life without parole for the 2021 murder of his wife, Helen Showalter. Koehlhoeffer, already serving sentences for a 2010 bank robbery and assaulting correctional officers.
