Irene Campbell, 88, of Burlington, died at 2:23 AM Thursday, November 21, 2013, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.
Born August 8, 1925, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of George William and Goldie M. Hoskins Boyd. On September 12, 1953, she married Kenneth J. Campbell in Fort Madison.
Irene worked as a hairdresser.
She was a graduate of Fort Madison High School and attended Burlington Beauty Academy for one year.
She was a member of Open Bible Church and the DOVE where she taught bible classes. She enjoyed bird watching especially Cardinals, collecting antique glass baskets, and salt and pepper shakers. She wrote a book about her and Kenneth’s experience with the adoption of their sons, which was later published and used today for the American Home Finding Association. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and telling stories of the past.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; two sons, Martin Campbell of Burlington, and Mark (Dawn) Campbell of New London; two grandchildren, Levi Campbell, and Jacob Campbell; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.
Visitation will be from noon until 5:00 PM Sunday, November 24, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral Monday, November 25, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mrs. Campbell will be 11:00 AM Monday, November 25, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Kenneth R. Petersen officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the service. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of the Thielen Crematory following the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for City Church of Burlington.

Barbara Jean Sorenson, 87, of Burlington, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa on Tuesday, November 19, 2013.
Born on December 15, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Paul A. and Mary Robinson Ruberg Buettner. She married Harold D. “Hal” Sorenson on December 28, 1950 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on November 8, 1992.
Barbara started teaching at Mediapolis where she taught English literature and history. She taught at every middle school in Burlington – Oak Street, James Madison, Horace Mann and Apollo Central. She established and organized the first library at James Madison School. She was a member of the Des Moines County Historical Society, AARP, Order of Eastern Star – White Star Chapter, Midwest Decoy Association, Burlington Women’s Literature Club and King’s Daughters. She was also a member as well as a vice president of the Humane Society. She enjoyed spending summers in Maine at their ocean front home. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She is survived by one son, Douglas C. Sorenson of Burlington, Iowa; one brother, Charles A. (Mary Ann) Buettner of Iron Mountain, Michigan; one granddaughter, Gabrielle Sorenson and one grandson, Hunter Sorenson, both of Burlington, Iowa; several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harold.
Funeral services for Barbara Jean Sorenson will be held on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Ryan Cosgrove will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.

Rachel Caroline (Coxon) Gaines born October 13, 1934 in Chicago, passed away as the nearly full moon rose on the horizon shortly after 6:00 PM Tuesday November 19, 2013.
Her crisp pearly blue eyes made her a bright baby girl for Percy M. and Theodora Coxon of Rockford, Ill.
She quickly made her mark with a high IQ, a sense of grace and dignity. She was a trend setter for women with a Jackie O flare of fashion, determined self worth, and quick wit.
An accomplished cellist with the Drake/Des Moines Symphony during college, a vivid artist painter of life, flora and abstract, a teacher with cutting edge ideas years ahead of her time, a homemaker with a Martha Stewart touch, a counselor with answers and compassion, an interior designer with fresh ideas and sharp style, a listener, a giver of love. She will be missed and remembered.
Rachel began her career as an Art Teacher in Newton and Des Moines, Iowa. She then worked at Younkers Home Store in Des Moines and later went on to work for Ethan Allen in Chicago suburbs, for 25 years as an interior designer.
She was a 1952 graduate of West High School in Rockford, IL. She then attended Drake University in Des Moines, IA, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in 1956 and received her teaching certificate from the State of Iowa. She later return to Drake University to study interior design.
She was a Professional Member of the American Society of Interior Design and an Associate Member of the Interior Design Society. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She enjoyed art, antiquing, decorating, and traveling. She also loved Paris, Audrey Hepburn and her cat, Holly.
Rachel was a mother to two blessed children, John David (Tami) Gaines of Burlington, and Kimberly Alice (Mark) Bartol of Lindenhurst, IL; and a grandmother of three sweet souls, Corwyn Gaines, and twins Caroline and Gregory Bartol; and a loving sister to Richard (Nancy) Coxon of Crossville, TN.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.
The Celebration of Life for Ms. Gaines will be 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM Saturday, November 23, 2013, at the home of John and Tami Gaines at 2706 Haskell Street in Burlington.
