Vivian Corine Manka, 94, of FortMadison passed away November 25, 2013 at The Kensington. She was born on February 2, 1919 in Fort Madison, IA to Robert & Ruth Miller Breen. She married Robert Manka, Sr. on February 17, 1939 at Sacred Heart Rectory in FortMadison. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2004.
Vivian began working at W. A. Sheaffer Pen Co. after graduating from high school at the age of 17, working there for over 25 years. She also designed windows at Kresge’s, P. M. Place, and Woolworth’s and also managed the men’s department at TG&Y.
She enjoyed volunteering and was very active as Chairman of the Board for the King’s Daughter’s Home in Fort Madison, was a Camp Fire Girl troop leader for 10 years, a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, and up until recently gave a lot of time and support to Friends of the Library. She and Bob loved golf, ballroom dancing and square dancing and she was able to continue square dancing until about one year ago.
Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline (William) Kurtt of Ahwahnee, CA, and Beverly (Gregg) Brockman of Fort Madison; two sons, Robert (Marta) Manka and Michael (Candace) Manka both of Fort Madison; 11 grandchildren, Brian (Denise) Kurtt of Melissa, TX, Bruce (Brenda) Kurtt of Fresno, CA, Bridget (Keith) DeJong, Montclair, CA, Sean (Gina) Manka, Castle Rock, CO, Kelly (Dan) Crooks, Fenton, MO, Ryan (Krystal) Manka, Cedar Rapids, IA, Samantha Manka and Alex Manka, both of Fort Madison, Nathan (Jodi) Brockman, Ames, IA, and Corinn (Jason) Hardy, Great Lakes, IL. There are also 21 great grandchildren, Angela Shamblin, Melissa, TX, Katherine, Jack, & Caroline Kurtt, Fresno, CA, Willa DeJong, Montclair, CA, Kenzie & Kylie Carpenter, Castle Rock, CO, Sarah, Anna, Josiah, Lydia, Leah, Laura Beth, and Norah Crooks of Fenton, MO, Linkin Manka, Cedar Rapids, IA, Max, Emma, Zoe, and Zach Brockman of Ames, IA, and Carter and Addison Hardy of Great Lakes, IL. She is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie Davis and Betty Sallen. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, William & Gordon Breen and two sisters, Ruth Breen and Joanne Tweedy.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2013 with the funeral service to immediately follow at 10:30 a.m. all at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Mike McHugh officiating. Burial will be held in SacredHeartCemetery. A memorial has been established in Vivian’s memory and contributions may be left at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. Michael E. Huss, 31, of Dallas City, IL passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at his home.
He was born September 18, 1982 in Burlington, IA, the son of Richard and Mary K. Herriman Huss Sr. On September 13, 2002 he married Cynthia Todd in Carthage, IL.
Michael was a 2000 graduate of DallasCityHigh School. He worked as a Boilermaker for Local #60 in Morton, IL. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time with his children.
He is survived by his wife, his parents of Dallas City, five children, Kataya, Derrick, Marissa, Bryar and Michaela Huss all of Dallas City, one sister, Teresa Ahlen of Fort Madison, IA, two brothers, Richard Huss Jr and Joshua Huss both of Dallas City and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
The family will meet with friends Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in DallasCity. A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, December 1st at the family pond, next to his parent’s home 260 East 1st St., Dallas City. Melvin Forest Nichols Jr., 53, of Burlington, died at 2:25 AM Monday, November 25, 2013, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born August 3, 1960, in Iowa City, IA, he was the son of Melvin Forest and Shirley Jean Scearcy Nichols.
Melvin worked in construction.
He was of the Christian faith. He was a Jack of all trades, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his family and his animals.
Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Marie Nichols; four sisters, Donna Nichols of Ohio, Sherry Brueck, Maggie Nichols, and Anita Nichols, all of Burlington; one half-sister, Julie Hummer of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.
There will be no visitation.
The memorial service for Mr. Nichols will be 2:00 PM Sunday, December 1, 2013, at First Assembly of God Church with Reverend Don Crawford officiating.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

James “Jim” Henry Stebbins, 87, of Burlington, Iowa, died Monday, November 25, 2013 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, IA. He was born November 21, 1926 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Gerald G. and Hazel I. Behrens Stebbins. On Feb. 11, 1978 he married Carolyn Ross Latty in Burlington.
Jim was a 1944 graduate of Oelwein High School and attended college at the University of Nevada and the University of Iowa. James was a Navy Veteran of WW II with the rank of Radar Technician Second Class.
James managed a number of Data Processing operations. He retired from Burlington Medical Center after 13 years as the Manager of Data Processing and was a charter member of the Data Processing Management Association. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Burlington where he served several terms on the Diaconate Board and belonged to the Congregators. He was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ. He enjoyed traveling and collecting stamps and slot machines.
Survivors include four daughters, Deborah (Mike) Pintar of Burlington, IA, Linda (Robert) Hoover of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Carol (Steven) Hildreth of Hastings, MN, Susan (Jeff) Haines of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one son, James (Judy) Stebbins of Mt. Pleasant, IA; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 grandson, Jacob Haines and his wife, Carolyn.
Funeral services for James Henry Stebbins will be held on Friday, November 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke United Church of Christ, 1403 South St., Burlington, Iowa. Officiant will be Pastor Mark Schowalter. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the United States Navy Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Following the graveside service a light meal will be served in the fellowship hall.
A memorial has been established for St. Luke United Church of Christ.
