Cheryl DeAnne Hartman, age 54 of Wapello, died Wednesday April 2, 2014 at her home in Wapello. The daughter of Richard and Edith (Byrd) Metzger, she was born January 31, 1960 at Muscatine. On November 7, 1992 she married Brian Hartman at Wapello. She attended Muscatine schools. She worked as a cook and dietary aide at various local care centers. She liked all forms of wildlife and loved to feed, watch, and photograph the birds and was a nurse to any and all injured cats and dogs as well as other animals that came across her path.
Survivors include: her husband, Brian, of Wapello; her Dad, Richard and Shirley Metzger of Columbus Junction; two sisters, Judy Metzger and Karen and Mark Bixby all of Muscatine; one brother, Richard Alan and Sherry Metzger of Muscatine; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her Mother, and infant brother Steven, and grandparents Gerald and Anna Metzger and Cecil and Pearl Byrd.
Visitation will be Wednesday April 9, 2014 from 1-2:00 p.m. at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Chester Grogan officiating. Cremation will follow the service and interment of the cremains will be at a later date at the GreenwoodCemetery in Muscatine. A general memorial has been established in her name.

Lewis D. Nelson, age 81 of Wapello, died Friday April 4, 2014 at GreatRiverMedicalCenter. The son of Omer and Cora (Keever) Nelson, he was born September 15, 1932 near Winfield. He was a 1951 graduate of the MorningSunHigh School. He served in the US Army for two years in Greenland. He married Marge Cross and they later divorced. On May 7, 1993 he married Mary Renshaw who died September 28, 2013. He was employed at JI Case in Burlington for many years. In earlier years he enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include: two sons; Danny and Victoria Nelson of Indianapolis, Indiana; Randy Nelson of Evansville, Indiana; two stepsons; Danny Renshaw of Panama City, Florida; Richard and Rita Renshaw of Burlington; one daughter Debra Graham and Pat Reeder of Wapello; one sister, Shirley and Ed Hudson of Winfield; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one son.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 1:00 -1:45 at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the CairoCemetery, with Rev. Dean Graber officiating. A general memorial has been established in his name.
Richard “Dick” Duane Hassman, 84, of Burlington, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington under the care of Great River Hospice with his family at his bedside.
He was born March 2, 1930 in Albia, Iowa, the son of Emil and Golda Hassman. He attended Albia High School and served in the Navy for four years.
Richard married Irene Meyers on October 21, 1950. They had two children, Kathy (Dan) Williams of Burlington, and Stephen (Becky) Hassman of Primrose. Irene is deceased.
Richard married Ruth Boyle on July 21, 1973. He then became a father to Robert Boyle of Burlington, Dena (Randy) McCulloch of Gladstone, and Tina (Lawrence) Aherns of Lincoln, NE. Richard is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, and two sisters.
Along with his wife, Ruth, he owned and operated Hassman Services/C-Cat, Inc. for over fifty years. Prior to that, he worked as an electrician for Burlington Northern Railroad and was a supervisor at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. He enjoyed his work and associating with his customers. He also enjoyed vacationing in Florida, running on the beach, swimming, reading, and riding his bicycle. Richard loved his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren have many fond memories of outlandish stories accompanied by fun adventures.
As per his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory. The community is invited to a Celebration of Life Open House from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie # 150. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Klein Center, Great River Hospice, and the Parkinson’s Foundation.

James Thomas “Tom” Dorris, 94, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the West Point Care Center. He was born on September 29, 1919 in Monroe, WA to Jimmie Lee & Bertie Cyrinthia Norris Dorris. He married Lillian Ruth Athey on May 12, 1947 in Olivehurst, CA. She preceded him in death on December 17, 2006. He was a newspaper executive for many years. He was a member of the Fort Madison United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
Tom is survived by: 1-daughter: Carolyn (Larry) Smith of Fort Madison, IA; 1-son: Richard (Gail) Dorris of Athens, GA;
4-grandchildren: Leslie (Drew) Hawkins, Lisa (Dave) Pursel, Christopher
(Emily) Smith & Carrie (Brent) Hunold; 7-great grandchildren & 1-sister: Dorothy Rose of Olivehurst, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife & 3-sisters.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Lanette Van officiating.
