Water, Sewer Gas Overcome Burlington Post Office; Public Works Plans for Post-Flood Downtown

U-S Postal Service officials say the Burlington post office is now closed completely until further notice, due to the flooding.

Most operations…including the numbered boxes…are now being run out of the former Tom’s Market & Meats location at 550 Division Street. All retail business…mailing packages and buying stamps included…is being handled by the West Burlington post office at 201 Broadway.   City officials met yesterday(Thur) to make plans for the next phase of dealing with the flood and its cleanup. Public Works Director Steve Hoambrecker says his crew plans to take down some of the Hesco barriers Monday, so the Burlington Short-Line Railroad can resume its connection with the Burlington-Northern/Santa Fe tracks.

Hoambrecker says the City has also set up porta-potties at the corners of Main Street and Valley, Jefferson & Washington, for those who may be having problems with their sanitary sewer systems.

The cost of replacing the Market Street Lift Station has been estimated at $300,000.
