Edward D. ‘Eddie’ Gerst, Jr., age 61, of rural Wapello, was found deceased Saturday evening, April 9, 2016, at his residence. The son of Frances Annabell Lee and Edward S. Gerst, Sr., he was born on September 2, 1954 in Burlington.
He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1972 and from Southeastern Community College in 1995 with a degree in Criminal Justice. Eddie worked at the Gypsum Plant from 1972 until 1993. He had been married to Beverly Johnson and Vicky Kiesel.
Eddie was affiliated with the First Baptist Church in Mediapolis. He was an accomplished 6 and 12 string guitar player along with the fiddle and banjo. He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, Sudoku, and crossword puzzles.
His family includes his father Edward Gerst, Sr.; a brother, Anthony ‘Tony’ & Viktoria Gerst of Wapello; a sister, Rebecca Brown of West Burlington; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families. He was preceded in death by his mother.
The family will meet friends on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the funeral ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at 10:00 AM with Pastor Dan Baker officiating. Cremation burial will follow at the Edwards Cemetery at Oakville.

Hugo “Hick” Thie, age 93 of Mediapolis, died Saturday April 9, 2016 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Sam and Ruby Thie, he was born June 2, 1922 in Mediapolis. On November 17, 1950 he married Mildred “Shorty” Pilling in Fairfield, Iowa. He was a 1941 graduate of the Mediapolis High School and attended Southeastern Community College where he played baseball and basketball. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in the Asiatic area from 1944-46 and was awarded a Purple Heart. Hick owned and operated Thie’s Food Market in Mediapolis for many years and was an accomplished meat cutter, proud of the fact he kept all ten fingers through the years. He was a member of the Harmony Bible Church in Danville. Hick enjoyed all sports and the outdoors, growing flowers and vegetables.
Survivors include: one son, Brent and Peggy Thie of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, David and Lois Hollingsworth, Dennis and Kathryn Hollingsworth, Doug and Kim Hollingsworth, Marcus Thie, Cody Thie, Steffi Thie; five great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister Marguerite, one brother Sam, and a daughter Joyce.
The funeral service will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, with Dan Dingus officiating. Interment will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 9-1 prior to the service at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends from noon until 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Harmony Bible Church.
Katherine J. “Kay” Ball, 88, of New London, died Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Pleasant Manor in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Aimee Goldmeyer will officiate. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, rural New London. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 PM before the service. A memorial has been established to the New London Presbyterian Church.
Shirley Ann Beckel, 85, of Silvis, Illinois and formerly of New London, died Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Aspen Rehab and Health Care in Silvis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor David Mixon will officiate. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, rural New London. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, prior to the service. A memorial has been established to the New London United Methodist Church.
Dr. John R. Peterson, 88, Burlington died Sat 4/9 at the Great River Hospice House.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta. 2 daughters, Maia Ingle of Charleston, SC & Nena Flatt of Fishers, IN, a brother, Walter of Burlington and 2 grandchildren.
