Obituaries Tuesday May 23rd

Miss Theresa Frances Beckman, 91, of Sperry died at12:55 a.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis.

Born November 15, 1925 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank Joseph and Agnes Mary (Fitzpatrick) Beckman.

Miss Beckman was a farmer and a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the area.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dodgeville and Willing Workers Club.

Survivors include a nephew-in-law, David Getchell; a great nephew, Damian Getchell; and a great-great niece, Blair Getchell all of Sperry.

Miss Beckman was preceded in death by her parents, sister, infant brother, and niece Rose Getchell.

A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dodgeville.

Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

 

Sarann Alice McMillan-Ried, 65, of West Burlington, died at 5:00 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

 

Born November 17, 1951, in Orlando, FL, she was the daughter of Robert and Edna Lewis McMillian. On December 24, 2004, she married Karl Louis Ried in Durham, New Hampshire. He died April 30, 2009.

 

Sarann worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in the HR Department.

 

She attended the University of New Hampshire.

 

She enjoyed quilting, cooking, all animals and was an animal rights activist.

 

Survivors include her mother, Edna; two sister, Denise Gose of Tucson, AZ, sister, Mary Kramer-Stubbs of Phenoix, AZ, one step-son, Travis Karl of West Burlington;  step-daughter, Karol Adamson of Kingston, Lisa Ried of West Burlington, Kristin Evans of Mediapolis, and Dawn Marie Olomon of Fayetteville, NC.

 

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her father and step-father Luke Victor Kramer.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation or services at this time.

 

A memorial has been established for the family.

Yvonne Annette Shelton-Sloan, 65, of Burlington, completed her earthly travels and departed from us on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

 

Born June 7, 1951, in Rock Island, Illinois, she was the daughter of James Albert and Beulah Elizabeth Robinson Shelton. On May 27, 1989, she married Owen Thomas Sloan in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

 

Yvonne worked for John Deere Corp. before moving to Burlington.  In Burlington she worked at, Long John Silvers, Target, and the Burlington Basket Factory.  She spent 25 plus years at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant as a production worker and a Quality-Lean Team Leader.  She received several certificates for safety, Quality, and Lean Production while there.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a past member of the Second Baptist Church, Ft. Madison.  Yvonne loved being with family and friends.  She was a member of St. Elmo #3 Chapter of the Eastern Star.  She loved watching Price is Right, Jeopardy, cooking shows, and reality shows on TV.  But she really loved time with her dog, Bailey, who she spoiled rotten, and always carried a plastic bag in her purse when going out to eat, this bag was for leftovers for Bailey. Yvonne loved that Mississippi River catfish and that bony Buffalo, plus those (pig parts she would have to cook on the front or back porch to keep Owen happy). She wanted to have her thousand food recipes put on CD’s but that is left to Owen to do so he can get rid of all those bags full of recipes.

 

Survivors include her husband; one son, Damien (Tonia) Washington of Nashville, TN; one daughter, Tiffany Shelton-Jackson of Ft. Wayne, IN; one sister, Betty Lou Shelton of Marietta, GA; two brothers, James “Jimmy” Shelton, and David Shelton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Argolda (Goldie) Shelton, Shirley Shelton, and Gloria Shelton, three brothers, Leroy Shelton, Ronnie Shelton, and Floyd Shelton, and two uncles, David Robinson & Rev. Donald Robinson Sr.

Friends may call at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home on Friday Noon until 5:00 PM. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Sloan will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Shane A. McCampbell officiating.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service. Burial will be at a later date.

Robert “Rob”  Rahija, 22, of Burlington, died at 2:11 PM Saturday, May 20, 2017, at his home.

 

Born June 30, 1994, in Iowa City, he was the son of Terry and Ruth Ann Bowman Rahija.

 

Rob worked in the kitchen at Hy-Vee.

 

He graduated Burlington High School in 2013, graduated the Job Corp in 2015 and attended Southeastern Community College.

 

He enjoyed playing football in High School, hanging out with his friends, and being the 2012 Homecoming King at BHS. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, and most of all he loved becoming a father to his son, Noah.

 

Survivors include his significant other, Alicia Waterman of Burlington; one son, Noah Rahija of Burlington;  his father;  four sisters, Cherish Rahija of Cedar Rapids, Holly (Joe Monahan) Rahija of Walker, Emily (Brendon Pierce) Rahija of South Sioux City, and Toni (Nate) Klein of Swisher; one niece Peighton Rahija; four nephews, Treighton Rahija, Clayton Hook, Jayden Hook, and Gary Klein; two uncles; three aunts, and his girlfriend’s Nana, Mary Waterman.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother, maternal & paternal grandparents, two uncles, Bobby & Mike Rahija, and one aunt, Linda Carter.

 

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home where the family will receive friends. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the visitation.

 

The memorial service for Rahija will be 11:00 AM Friday, May 26, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating.

Jacqueline L. Sievers, age 77 of West Burlington died Saturday May 20,2017 at the New London Specialty Care Center.  The daughter of Earl and Vera (Price) Tesdahl she was born April 11, 1940 at Ames, Iowa.  On April 24, 1964 she married Loren Sievers at Nashua, Iowa; he died August 1, 2011.  She was a graduate of the Winfield High School, class of 1958 and attended Burlington Business College.  She worked at National Bank of Burlington from 1958-68.  She then worked at Autumn Heights as executive office administrator from 1970-2006.  She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis.

Survivors include; two daughters, Lori Anderson of Burlington and Janelle Sievers of West Burlington; three grandchildren; one sister Patsy Bozarth of Winfield.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

A graveside service will be Tuesday May 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, Rev. Bruce Smith officiating.  A memorial has been established for Immanuel Lutheran Church.  Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Betty E. Hightower, 82, of Burlington, died at 4:25 PM Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born March 27, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Samuel Raymond and Frances Pearl Sturhahn Willson. On January 29, 1956, she married Donald Wayne Hightower in Burlington.  He died May 26, 2001.

 

Betty was a bookkeeper for King’s Food Host, KDWD Radio Station and American Cancer Sociey.  She also was a receptionist for the Burlington Board of Realtors.

 

She was a 1953 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and doing alterations for her friends.  She also enjoyed flower gardening.

 

Survivors include one son, Kenny Hightower of Burlington; two daughters, Sandy Herold of Peoria, IL, and Carol (Mike) Miskovic of Burlington; six grandchildren, Valerie (Cory) Olson, Leland (Christine) Deehring, Lana (Ryne) Crowell, David Hightower, Melissa (Jace) Skalinski, and Chris (Scott) Collins; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter-in-law; Cheryl Hightower, one son-in-law, Pat Herold; four sisters, Martha Hartman, Dorothy Rickeberg, Lynda Murray, Maryann Cochran and one brother, Raymond Willson.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Hightower will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Will Ryan officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for the funeral dinner program.
