Gilbert Ellis

One of the three Chicago men accused in a shooting that occurred last November has received a ten-year prison sentence.

30-year-old Gilbert Lee Ellis was given that sentence when he appeared in front of Judge Michael Shilling for sentencing Tuesday afternoon. Ellis had previously pleaded Guilty to a charge of Conspiracy to Commit Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, which is a class C Felony.

Prosecutors argued that a message needed to be sent, due to the “severe and serious nature of the crime,” as well as the danger it posed to the community. Ellis’ defense attorney said that Ellis had a limited criminal history, and would be a good candidate for probation.

Judge Schilling addressed Ellis in the courtroom, saying that he had no question that a prison term was the right sentence, as Ellis’ criminal behavior had escalated, from two convictions for Possession of Marijuana, to being involved in a shooting, he described the offense as ‘serious.’

Ellis, along with two other Chicago men, Holland Ewing and Dontis Davis, were arrested following an incident on November 22nd of last year, when police were securing a homicide scene on South Garfield Street, and heard shots ring out a block away. That shooting was the fourth that had taken place in a twelve hour period that day.
