A man accused in the beating death of his mother last month been found not competent to stand trial for the murder.

Court documents filed last week show that 29-year-old Garrett Selters suffers from Schizophrenia,  delusions, and hallucinations. Police say Garrett hit 59-year-old Linda Selters with an electric guitar, killing her on October 26th. The two lived together in a home on Lincoln Street in Burlington.

Selters was examined at Iowa Medical and Classification Center. Medical staff determined he is aware of what appropriate behavior is, but is not capable of managing his behavior. Although the examining physician says he is not competent to stand trial, he is a candidate for “restoration.”

The first-degree murder charge has been suspended and Selters has been committed to IMCC for treatment. If his mental condition improves charges against him can be reinstated.
