Iowa Cancer Patient Arrested for Growing Pot

A cancer patient from the Davenport area is charged with growing marijuana. Phil Roberts reports:

“Scott County prosecutors say 47-year-old Benton Mackenzie is a drug dealer. They say he had 71 marijuana plants in his parents’ house. But the Quad-City Times reports Mackenzie has terminal cancer and says he relies on marijuana to help him cope with his illness. A court will decide his fate next month. Continue Reading

More Candidate Forums Coming Up

Get ready for another round of city council candidates forums.

The Greater Burlington Partnership’s Government Affairs Committee will question the six Burlington council wanna-be’s left after next week’s primary election. The forum will be Tuesday, October 29th, at 6:30, at City Hall. The following night, Wednesday the 30th also at 6:30, the committee will grill those trying to win seats on the West Burlington Council. Manufacturing Jobs Available, No One To Fill Them

An Iowa business group is working with the state’s community colleges, like Southeastern Community College,  to boost programs that develop work skills, like welding, that are in short supply. Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds has been leading state government efforts to boost enrollment in science, technology, engineering and math courses. “Not only is there existing need, but we have a lot of business and industry tell us they are at a place where they can really expand. Again, it comes back to that skills gap in order to find the skilled worker they need in order to expand.” Some community colleges are retooling their classrooms with the latest advanced manufacturing gadgets. Obituaries Monday September 30th

Maribeth Essex, 77, of Stronghurst, IL died at 10:28 AM Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the  Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.  

Born May 9, 1936, in Oquawka, IL, she was the daughter of Clifford S. and Nannie Hightower Essex.  

Maribeth worked at Warren Achievement Sheltered Workshop in Monmouth, the Hub Restaurant and did baby sitting.  

She was a graduate of G&O High School.  She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Continue Reading
