Robert Maynard Kerr, age 75 of Mediapolis, died Sunday March 23, 2014 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Rex and Ruby (Herr) Kerr, he was born April 1, 1938 at Newport, Iowa. On September 27, 1959 he married Caryl Eland at Fairfield, Iowa. He attended the MorningSunSchool. He was a 25 year member of the Mediapolis Lions Club, a member of the Odd Fellows, and was of the Presbyterian Faith. He worked for many years at Schrock lumber yard in Mediapolis.
Survivors include: his wife of Mediapolis and three children, Deb, Steve and Sue; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Jean Hostetter of Yarmouth and Beverly Wolfe of Davenport; one brother, Merle “Pete” Kerr of Newport; nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, two sisters and one brother.
The funeral service will be Thursday March 27, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis, with Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating. Interment will follow at the KossuthCemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p.m. A general memorial has been established in his name. Officials say a Burlington man is recovering after he accidentally shot himself in the foot while hunting. The state Department of natural Resources says 31-year-old Dustin Guernsey was injured Saturday morning in Lee County. He was hunting for snow geese at the time. Officials say he was carrying equipment and his shotgun as he walked across a field. He stumbled and the weapon discharged into his left foot. Continue Reading
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A new study shows higher rates of smoking in rural Iowa counties.
The Des Moines Register reports that the study says some Iowa counties have double the smoking rates of others.
The national report from the University of Washington says Iowa’s Dallas County had the seventh-fastest decline in smoking from 1996 through 2012, when it went from 19.4 percent to 10.9 percent. The report also shows that all Iowa counties have had declines in smoking.
The researchers used data from phone surveys taken for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Continue Reading
EAST MOLINE, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in a Quad Cities community are investigating after they discovered a dozen razor blades glued to playground equipment in an East Moline city park.
The razor blades were discovered Monday in the community’s Millennium Park after a 2-year-old boy sliced his finger on a razor. The laceration was minor. Police Lt. Brian Foltz told the Quad-City Times that officers are “always doing park checks,” but authorities aren’t sure how long the blades had been attached to the playground equipment. Continue Reading
A Burlington man has been accused of selling drugs at 558 1/2 South Central Avenue as police waited for him outside. 27-year-old Monroe Walton of 539 South 8th Street will face three felony charges– Delivery of Crack Cocaine, Possession with the Intent to Deliver, and Possession with Intent to Deliver Schedule-3 Pharmaceuticals. Authorities took Walton to the Des Moines County Jail to await a court hearing. A judge set his bond at $150,000. Police say more arrests are anticipated. Continue Reading
