“Chet” Lloyd Chester Young of Camdenton, Missouri, completed this part of life and went home to live with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday May 8, 2018 in Camdenton, Missouri.
Chet was born August 7, 1954 in Independence, Missouri to Von D. Young and Margaret O. Young, nee Dawson. On July 4, 1988 Chet met his soul mate, Coleen Francik-Young in Camdenton; together they enjoyed 30 wonderful and fun filled years of life. They were joined in holy matrimony on July 4, 2010 in Burlington, Iowa.
Chet worked in the mass appraisal industry for Cardwell and Associates for several years before meeting Coleen and moving to Burlington, IA. Shortly after coming to Burlington, he was hired by the late Mad Hatter which began a 24 year career in broadcast radio, eventually serving as sales manager for Pritchard Broadcasting. While there, Chet became very well-known and respected for all of his work in town; he started a yearly Bridal Fair, Home Show, Boat Show and also brought many country concerts and broadway musicals to Burlington. Chet was one of the founders of Burlington’s Snow Bull, an annual rodeo held at Memorial Auditorium. He also announced High School and International Dragon Boat races. Chet was President of the local Optimist club, earning the Distinguished President’s award. He served on the Burlington-West Burlington Area United Way for 23 years, 12 as a board member, 2 as President along with various other leadership roles. His motto was “we speak as One voice as a board.” He was a board member on the local Girl Scout Council, involved with Rotary club, Salvation Army and DJ’d for local Hope Haven Dances. Chet played a big role in founding a local law enforcement event known as Top Gun.
In High School he loved playing sports and earned his varsity letter for football as a freshman. He also played basketball. He was an avid reader; reading online newspapers every morning and novels at night. He loved wildlife (his foxes and ducks will miss their daily feedings!) and also the cocker spaniels he’s had over the years.
Chet loved boating. The radio station held Jammin’ in the Sand parties on ISU Island, just south of town. Everybody knew his big boat, “Mi Deah Mon.” His wonderful deep booming voice could be heard all over town. When he met someone on the street, he immediately hollered “Hey, Dawg!” He loved to travel, especially to Jamaica, having visited there over 50 times. He was a loyal, life-long Kansas City Chiefs fan; (one of the first things he taught his grandson to say was “Go Chiefs”!) He was a “jack of all trades”, able to navigate computers, electrical issues, old cars, and could build almost anything out of wood.
Chet loved his family, especially his “favorite” grandson Kaedyn, who adored and worshipped his Papa Chet. His granddaughters Laney, Leah and Payton along with great granddaughter Lilah also held special places in his heart.
Chet retired from the business world in September 2015 and immediately followed his dream of moving to Lake of the Ozarks where he loved to boat, feed the animals, work in the yard and drive his old Suzuki Samari.
Chet is survived by his wife, Coleen, son Ethan Young of Kansas City, daughter Marcy Brockett (Jim) of Marion, AR. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and his parents Von D. and Margaret O. Young.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 13, 2018 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Camdenton United Methodist Church in Camdenton, Missouri. Services will follow at 2:00 pm at the church.
Memorial donations are suggested to Dogwood Animal Shelter or to Camdenton United Methodist Church—Children’s Program.
