DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa delegates have helped Hillary Clinton become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.
Thirty Iowa delegates, including seven superdelegates, cast votes Tuesday for Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The votes during a roll call added to Clinton’s total as she became the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party.
Clinton’s former rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, received 21 votes from Iowa delegates. Clinton had a slight edge over Sanders to win the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses earlier this year.
The Iowa delegation was elected at district and state conventions. Iowa delegates for the Republican Party voted to make Donald Trump its presidential nominee during the GOP’s national convention last week.
Former U.S. Sen. Tom Harken of Iowa also addressed the Democratic convention Tuesday.
