Julie Sue Ballew, 75, of Swedesburg, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.

Born April 7, 1947, in Rigby, ID, she was the daughter of Fabyn Albert and Sarah Norma Scott Hanson. On December 10, 1966, she married Robert Bernard Smith. He passed away May 22, 1968. She later married Donald Audsley Ballew August 10, 1969. He then passed away January 3, 2013. On August 25, 2016, she married Paul G. Hazelett in Swedesburg, Iowa.

Sue graduated from Rigby High School in 1965.

Sue had many jobs. She was a Paraprofessional, bus driver, educator, and an administrative assistant. Her most important job was being a mother.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and enjoyed going to the services. Sue enjoyed hiking, camping, traveling, and gardening. She liked to cook using her dutch oven, canning, sewing, and decorating. Sue was always prepared for any emergency.

Survivors include husband, Paul G. Hazelett of Swedesburg, IA; three sons, Jeffrey Dale Ballew of Woodland Hills, UT, Christopher David Ballew of League City, TX and David Dale Ballew of Boise, ID; four daughters, Sarah Dee Behunin of Salem, IA, Emily Dawn Stumpf of Burlington, IA, Julie Diane Jones of Washington, IA, and Rebecca Darlene McDermott of Cascade, IA; 30 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bryce Allen Hanson of Brookfield, IL and Clayne A. Hanson of Salmon, ID; sister, Norma DeeAnn Wright of Chesterfield, MO; 13 nieces and nephews.

Besides her husbands, Donald Ballew and Robert Smith, she is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Jeanà Smith and brother, Niles Hanson.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM Friday, February 17, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St.

The funeral service for Mrs. Ballew will be 5:00 PM Friday, February 17, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St., with President Ryan Sowell officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the service. A private family burial will be in Hale Cemetery in Hale, Missouri.

A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Don G. Dixon, 91, of Burlington, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born April 5, 1931, in Oquawka, IL, he was the son of Gillette Brimhall and Marjorie Maude Noble Dixon.

He graduated from Oquawka High School in 1949. He then went on to attend Monmouth College and graduated in 1959. After graduation, he received his Bachelor of Arts from the Burlington School of Business.

Don was the human resource manager for Lehigh-Leopold Furniture for 33 years. He also worked as an accountant.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran from January 1952 until January 1954, serving during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he continued his service with the Army Reserves until his discharge on March 19, 1960. During his service he received the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, and a National Defense Service Medal.

Don was a member of the Henderson County Historical Society, and served as treasurer. He assisted in the restoration and operations of the Phelp’s House in Oquawka, IL. Don liked to square dance and was a member of the Square Naders dancing group. He enjoyed cars, watching baseball and basketball games and racing.

Survivors include, his companion of 43 years, Patricia “Pat” Ann Bullinger of Burlington; son, Steven Don (Nicole) Dixon of Ft. Madison; daughter, Michele Lea (Stephen) Aspleaf of Overland Park, KS; six grandchildren, Tim (Chloe), Jill (Tyler), Lanie, Cael, Bram and Colie; two great-grandsons, Liam and Wyatt; two step-sons, Erik (Stephanie) Bullinger of Mason City, IA and Karl (Susan) Bullinger of Iowa City; four step-daughters, Erin (Jim) Folker of Mt. Pleasant, Seana (Brian) Krohn of Stoughton, WI, Michele (Brent) Mauer of Mediapolis, and Cara O’Sullivan of Murray, UT; 13 step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren, with one on the way; brother, Leslie (Sue) Dixon of Geneva, IL; sister, Colleen Dixon of Dahinda, IL; eight nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Elaine Brokaw, Jo Klossing, Karen Sue Dixon, and Joyce Adair; and three brothers-in-law, Frank Brokaw, Dean Klossing and John Adair; and ex-wife, Lila Campbell.

The funeral service for Mr. Dixon will be 1:30 PM Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St. with Reverand Tamara Wirt officiating. Burial will be in Oquawka Cemetery with full military honors.

A memorial has been established for the Henderson County Historical Society.

Sean Daniel Chaney, 52, and Dawn Ann Chaney, 50 of rural LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Sean was born September 20, 1970 in Los Angeles, California, the son of William E. and Patricia Ann (Wyatt) Chaney. On December 26, 1992 he married Dawn Ann Chaney at the Lomax Nazarene Church Lomax, Illinois.

Sean was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. He worked as a fabricator for Yetter Farm Equipment in Colchester. Sean was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed, hunting, mushrooming, and especially fishing.

Dawn was born September 23, 1972 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Donald P. And Barbara S. (Todd) McCoy. On December 26, 1992 she married Sean Daniel Chaney at the Lomax Nazerene Church, Lomax, Illinois.

Dawn was a 1990 graduate of LaHarpe High School. She worked at Methode in Carthage until its closing. She then worked for Casey’s and Dollar General both in LaHarpe. Dawn enjoyed participating in Sean’s fishing and hunting hobbies. Her greatest love was her family.

Survivors include two sons: Nick and Austin Chaney both of LaHarpe; one daughter: Katie Chaney of Keokuk, Iowa; his mother: Patty Chaney of Florida; three grandchildren: Calliope, Louis and Lyanna Thompson; two brothers: Robert and James Chaney; one sister: Rebecca Thomas and several nieces and nephews. Dawn also survived by: one brother: Brian (Betty) McCoy of LaHarpe; two sisters: Shelly (John) Cunningham of Carthage and Lori (Steve) Fickel of Buhler, Kansas and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Joseph H. Nuebel, 92, of Burlington, died Monday, February 6, 2023 at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born September 8, 1930 in Lee County, IA he was the son of Joseph Bernard and Catherine Henrietta (Fraise) Nuebel. Joseph graduated from St. Joseph High School in Ft. Madison, IA. He joined the United States Air Force March 5, 1951 and served during the Korean War. He was an E5 Tech Sargent at the time of his separation on December 3, 1954.
After his service in the Air Force, Joseph was an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration for 23 ½ years. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed flying.
Survivors include two brothers David Nuebel of Burlington and John (Sharon) Nuebel of Nauvoo, IL; sister-in-law Betty Nuebel of Ruckersville, VA; nine nephews; seven nieces and several great nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and six brothers.
The graveside service for Mr. Nuebel will be 11:00 AM Monday, February 13, 2023 at Keokuk National Cemetery. The visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Harley D. Palmer, 88, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away at 12:00 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2023 at his home.

Harley was born January 30, 1935 in Downing, Missouri the son of Luel and Lillian (Smith) Palmer. On May 18, 1956 he married Shirley “Rusty” Palmer in Long Beach, California. She preceded him in death December 18, 2015.

Harley was a graduate of Terre Haute High School, Terre Haute, Illinois. Following high school he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 – 1956. He worked as mechanic and an upholsterer all of his life. In his younger years, he enjoyed spending time on the lake, water skiing and square dancing with his wife.

Mr. Palmer is survived by one daughter: Cindy Palmer of LaHarpe; two step-children: Darlene Robbins of Las Vegas and Ray Robbins of Arizona; nine grandchildren: Michael Palmer, Bobby Swift, Shannon Bischel, Marty Burdg, Cassie Burdg, Samantha Poque, Michelle Allison, Daniel Bowman and Jason Robbins; numerous great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three step-children: Lee Robbins, Dee Robbins and Michael Hardman; one grandson: Jason Burdge; one sister: Lois Bennett and two brothers: Hollis and Boyd “Whitey” Palmer.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Burial with Military Rites will follow in the Terre Haute Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends for one hour prior to the service.

Joyce L. Gibbs, 79, of Burlington, died Saturday, February 4, 2023, at her home.

Born June 4, 1943, in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of John Frederich and Lena Emma Elliot Wirt. On December 6, 1963, she married Ronald Lester Gibbs in Joyce’s parent’s home. On August 8, 2021 he passed away.

Joyce graduated from Burlington High School in 1961 then attended business school for banking.

She was a note teller for F&M Bank and Trust for 42 years.

Joyce enjoyed quilting, cross stitch and remodeling. She liked to go camping and enjoyed watching the squirrels and other animals.

Survivors include son, Kurt Edward Gibbs of Tipton, IA; daughter, Deborah L. Gibbs of Burlington, IA; two grandchildren, Sarah (Collin) Stuefen of Tipton, IA and Kimber (Rachel) Gibbs of Burlington, IA; great-grandchild, Phoenix Mitchell of Burlington, IA.

Besides her husband of 57 years, she was preceded in death by her parents and sister Barb.

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Friday, February 10, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St.

Ralph Alan Gittings, 62, was surrounded by family as he peacefully passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023. Born July 16, 1960 to Brenda Ruth Goff and Forrest Dean Gittings in Reno, Nevada, Ralph graduated in 1979 from Warren High School in Monmouth, Illinois. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October of 1978 and served until separation in November of 1986. Ralph worked for a short time in Peoria, Illinois before going to work for General Electric in Burlington, Iowa. He was employed at GE for 28 years and attended courses at Southeastern Community College through the years to improve his job skills. In November of 2006 he opened Poorman’s Computer at his home.
Ralph married Kathy Lynn Harlow on July 19, 1979 in Kirkwood, Illinois and they later divorced. They had two children: Brooke Gittings of South Bend, Indiana and Zakari Gittings of Burlington, Iowa.
Ralph then married Sandra Henderliter of October 7, 2006 in Burlington, gaining two step-sons: Daniel Henderliter and Robert Barnwell, both of Burlington.
Ralph will be remembered as a generous, loving man. He volunteered at Great River Christian School. He would stop to help people on the side of the road. He has opened his home to those in need and given generously to others. Ralph valued hard work, a work ethic, honesty and the value of someone’s word. He was a loving and caring husband, a protector and provider to his wife. He took her on many trips and provided for her generously. Ralph enjoyed fishing with family and especially enjoyed the peace and tranquility of fishing at the break of dawn.
Ralph was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Rodney Gittings. Ralph is survived by his wife, mother, children, step-children, two sisters: Rhonda (Eric) Catha-Kramer of Lancaster, SC and Rachel Gittings of New Orleans; one brother; Richard (Kristie) Gittings of New Orleans; and several nieces and nephews.
It was Ralph’s wish to be cremated and Lunning Chapel has been entrusted with his care. A Celebration of Life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 10 a.m.

Dianna Dickinson, 77, of Burlington, died Thursday, January 19, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born April 20, 1945, in Leon, Iowa, she was the daughter of Claude and Bernice Baker Brown. She was one of 10 daughters and loved being from a large family. On March 1st, 1979 she married Charles Dickinson in Hollywood.CA. He died on February 4, 2019.

Dianna was a member of New Life Family Church. She loved Jesus with all her heart, soul and spirit and her purpose in life was to serve Him. She loved hosting bible studies and reading her bible every day. She loved and adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include four daughters, Dalena Ganakes (Mark) Larson of Sunrise Beach, MO, Denise Ganakes of Camarillo, CA, Danielle Ganakes (George) Harrison of Camarillo, CA, Ashly Dickinson (Cody) Harkcom of Springtown, TX; 14 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sisters, Jeannie Kuster, Claudia Rehman, Tina Brown, Kimberly Kineast and Jackie Brown all of Burlington, Jaye Talor of Santa Barbara, CA and Debbie Dotson of Dixon, TN.

Besides her husband of 39 years, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Marilyn Pilgrim and Linda Seitz.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The celebration of life for Dianna will be 11:00 AM Friday, April 7, 2023, at New Life Family Church. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Drake following the service.

Duane A. “Suds” Sulzberger, 85, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Hospice House on February 4, 2023.

Duane was born on January 26, 1938 in Ransom, Illinois to Dorothy (Reed) Sulzberger and Earl Sulzberger. He was the second youngest out of six children. He attended and graduated from Dallas City High School in 1956. He worked at the IAAP for 43 years. On February 1, 1958, he married Carole Sue Combites of Stronghurst, Illinois. They had four children: Kevin (Keti) Sulzberger of Topeka, Kansas; Kris McClanahan of Burlington; Kim Covey of Burlington; and Kent (Angela) Sulzberger of Morton, Illinois.

Duane was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan. He enjoyed playing pool, fishing, and golfing. He loved to drink beer and listened to old country in his shop.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years; their four children; eleven grandchildren, Tony Rose, Tami Breen, Ashley Nichols, Courtney Kruse, Jade Hierstein, Mackenzie Covey, Skylar McClanahan, Shelby McClanahan, Bryce Sulzberger, Kaylee Sulzberger, Keon Sulzberger; sixteen great-grandchildren, and also one brother, Fred Sulzberger of Rogers, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Earl Jr. Sulzberger, Robert Sulzberger, Darryl Sulzberger, one sister, Marilyn Kay Gansey, and one grandson, Michael Sulzberger.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

There will be no visitation or service at this time. Inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
